LipSense Review

Last Friday, I mentioned LipSense in my Friday Favorites.

I’d seen people raving about this lipstick. It’s definitely a new trend that has surfaced, and is one that seems to be staying for a while. It’s called LipSense, and it’s become popular due to its claims of being smudgeproof, long-wearing, and kissable.

I’d seen it around, and wasn’t sure I wanted to try it, considering one color is $25, plus the gloss and the remover. But when my best friend decided to host a party on Facebook, I figured I’d give it a shot. I ordered 2 colors, First Love and Cranberry, plus the glossy gloss and the remover. Here is my honest review, including pros, cons, and initial thoughts (this post is not sponsored in any way. I’ve been asked by a few friends what I thought after trying it, and wanted to share!):

My first thought was that it BURNED. There is alcohol in the product that helps kill bacteria. However, the burning sensation definitely decreases over the next couple of uses, and after a couple of applications, it goes away completely. I didn’t like the color First Love on me. It was just a little too brown, and didn’t look good with my skintone. But I LOVED Cranberry. I wore it to the Reds game, and it lasted through dinner and the game.

I tested this lipstick out a few different ways. I’ve worn it all day at work, and I even tested it out at the dentist. When the girl was about to clean my teeth, she asked me to remove my lipstick so she didn’t smudge it all over my face. I told her I was going to test it, so I left it on. However, I didn’t know I was also going to have a filling fixed and a temporary crown put on, so the appointment ended up being a little more extensive than I’d planned. While my teeth were being cleaned, though, she kept talking to me about my lipstick, and how impressed she was with it. Some came off, but most of it was still on, and it did not smudge onto my face AT ALL. Obviously the gloss needed to be reapplied, and the color needed a little touchup, but it really wasn’t bad. Overall, I was very satisfied with it.

Before the appointment (I’m wearing a mixture of Cranberry and Mauve Ice):

After the appointment:

The pros: It is definitely long-lasting. It is smudgeproof, which is great when drinking coffee or going to dinner, or just brunch with the girls. It would definitely be a good lipstick for date night. It’s really nice for work, because you don’t have to keep reapplying it after drinking coffee or eating lunch. It’s even puppy kiss proof!

I also like that you can layer the colors for different effects. I haven’t tried this much, but I’ve seen a couple of options I’d like to try. Some of the color combos I’ve seen look really pretty!

The cons: I don’t notice smells when it comes to beauty products, but I’ve heard a couple of people say there’s an unpleasant smell when I’ve been applying it. It’s hard to remove. When applying it, you have to have a couple of minutes, because each layer takes about 30 seconds to dry, and you do need to apply a few layers.

One con for me was the starter kit. You get one color, one gloss and one remover for $55, which isn’t too bad. What I didn’t like about it was that the glossy gloss is the recommended gloss for the starter kit. I am 100% a matte lip girl. I’m not a fan of glossy lips, and would have rather gotten the matte gloss. But, I can deal with it. I also feel like I wasted my money with the remover. Yes, it makes removing the color fairly easy, but if you want to know a secret, eye makeup remover works just as well. I’ve been using the Mary Kay eye makeup remover with it, and it’s not difficult to remove. It may take a few minutes to scrub it off, but it does remove all the color.

Overall, I am very impressed. It really does last all day with minimum touchup. It lasts through food, drinks, work, and even mostly through a dentist appointment. It feels really nice on the lips, and with the different glosses it can be matte or glossy. I know I’ll be buying more colors in the future!

Above, I’m wearing Caramel Apple. It’s a pretty, shimmery deep neutral pink. I LOVE it. It’s my favorite that I’ve tried so far, and I love wearing it on an every day basis.
