I’m always looking for unique experiences in the Bluegrass, and with warmer weather coming, Rail Explorers is a great option! The starting point is just outside of Lexington, KY in Versailles, and you pedal your way through a few miles of beautiful countryside.
I’ve been wanting to check this out for a while, and I finally went with my nieces and friend Megan. We went in the evening, and it was a great little ride. This is such a unique experience that would be fun for families, a little girls’ night, or even a date night.
You start out by the railroad museum, and they load you into a car. You pedal your way through Versailles, taking a ride through the woods. It’s a great way to see some countryside and explore the outdoors. You also pass some beautiful horse farms (there were plenty of horses out when we rode through, but I bet it would probably be even better during foaling season).
Halfway through the ride, the cars are reversed on the tracks so you go back the way you came. While the crew is turning the cars, riders can stop and check out the Young’s High Bridge over the Kentucky River (sorry, there’s a fence so you can’t actually walk on the bridge). The view is absolutely beautiful, especially around sunset; you can even catch a glimpse of the Wild Turkey Distillery. Snacks and drinks are encouraged for this part of the ride.
The adventure was once part of the Louisville Southern Railroad, which is pretty cool. You do pedal your way along the tracks, but a motor is included in each car. It is a little bit of exercise, but it’s very low effort, so it’s great for all ages and people who may not have great mobility (honestly, in a group of 4, not everyone has to be pedaling constantly. It’s helpful, but definitely not required).
The tour totals around 2 hours, and it’s such a fun little adventure! It was a little chilly for our ride, but I honestly loved that. I do recommend gloves if it’s chilly, and sunglasses! We rode in the evening and sunglasses were a must.
Things to note:
One dog is allowed per car, but it must lie down on the car during the whole ride and must be on a leash or harness.
There is no bathroom along the trail, other than at the starting point.
Food and drinks are allowed on the ride.
There is a small basket on the cars for items like purses and phones, but there are no cupholders.

Overall, we had a great experience, and I would love to go back soon!
