I’ve been to Danville, KY a few times, but it’s mostly been for softball tournaments. I haven’t really had much of a chance to explore the town and try some of the delicious food Danville has to offer (usually we only have a small amount of time to eat, and have a group of picky eaters that only want chicken tenders and burgers). I joined a walking Danville, KY Food Tour through Bites of the Bluegrass, and loved getting to explore the city and some of its tastes.
We tried a variety of foods, and visited a few local businesses throughout the city. Bites of the Bluegrass provided some history of the city (it was really interesting, full of fun facts and stories), which was very enjoyable. The tour is a walking tour, so we had the change to see a little bit of the town, while learning along the way. Just an FYI, alcohol is not provided on the tour with a ticket purchase, but is available to purchase at a few of the stops along the way. They are also accommodating to any dietary restrictions, and are happy to assist tour members with any food hesitations.
Dry Stack
Our first stop along the tour was Dry Stack Coffee Company. They provide locally roasted, small batch, single origin coffee. Unlike most coffee providers, who roast their coffee in drum roasters, Dry Stack uses an air roasting process. The coffee was very smooth in my opinion. We also tried a biscuit with blueberry compote and bacon butter. I was honestly a little hesitant about this combo, but was pleasantly surprised at the flavors. I definitely want to go back and try some other coffee options! Plus, they have some really cute decor, which is always fun in a coffee shop.
Copper and Oak
We ventured over to Copper and Oak to try the Shrimp and Grits and the Crab Cake. I’m a big fan of seafood, and both of these items were absolutely delicious. The rest of the menu also looked great, and I’d love to go back and try more soon. This was probably my favorite stop on the tour. I also decided on a French 75, a champagne and gin cocktail I’ve been really loving lately. A couple of people in our group ordered the Old Fashioned, which they make in front of you. That’s always a neat experience, and I definitely suggest trying it out if you’re a bourbon fan.
The Still KY
We didn’t visit The Still‘s physical location. They were kind enough, though, to meet us at Centreworks (the next section of this post talks about the non-restaurants we explored in Danville, like Centreworks) and give us a little taste of their menu. We tried a Grilled Pork Tenderloin with a mustard vinaigrette, on top of spaetzel and kale with bacon and mushrooms. I’m honestly not a big fan of pork, but I’ll give anything a try, and the dish surprisingly was pretty tasty. I loved the spaetzle, and the rest of their menu looks amazing. We also had a little Blue Rook Distillery Caipirinha cocktail, which was really good (I’ll be on the hunt to find Blue Rook Cachaca around Lexington soon). The rest of their cocktails sound right up my alley, and it’s on my list to visit ASAP.
Bricks & Brews + Voodoo Eats
I’ve seen Voodoo Eats in passing, and it’s always intrigued me. I love unique flavors, and I was very happy with our meal. We were served Butter Paneer (it’s grilled Indian cheese), and it was so flavorful. Their menu is more extensive than I’d expect (they even have a kids menu), so I think it would be a great place to eat even if you have picky eaters. Bricks & Brews is also in the same location together with Voodoo Eats, which is great if you have a large group. I tried a French Martini (vodka, raspberry liqueur with pineapple juice), and their drink menu was definitely as intriguing as the food.
La Cosa Nostra
We ended our food tour at La Cosa Nostra, an Italian restaurant, with a dessert plate that still has me drooling. Our plate included Gelato, Ricotta Cheesecake, and Lemon Creme Cake. Oh. My. Goodness. I definitely have a sweet tooth, and these flavors were all right up my alley. I ordered prosecco to go with my dessert (I just asked for the house champagne or prosecco), and it complimented the desserts very well. I would LOVE to go back soon, because if the desserts are that good, I want to try the rest of the menu. The decor was also really pretty, and I love the safe in the back (they even moved the door so we could see both sides).
Art Center of the Bluegrass
We spent some time in The Art Center of the Bluegrass checking out the exhibits. They showcase local, regional, and international artwork through rotating exhibits. The artwork changes throughout the year, which I think is really cool. Stephen Rolfe Powell is the current featured artist, and his work is absolutely beautiful (and some is up for sale). The center has a little gift shop too, featuring some very talented local artists. I snagged a couple of pairs of earrings that I think are gorgeous, and supporting local artists is always such a great feeling.
Centreworks
Centreworks was created by Centre College to build community. The building is available for coworking, for events, for community, for meeting spaces, and more. Help is available for entrepreneurs who are interested in starting a business in the area through Centreworks. I loved checking out the office space. There are some lovely views of the city, and some really fun work areas. This is where we met up to try food from The Still. Check out their website to see some of their program offerings and reach out to them with any questions!
Overall, I really enjoyed our food tour of Danville. I saw a few other local businesses I’d like to check out, and I think it would be really fun to go back another day. Bites of the Bluegrass also gives tours in Lexington. I haven’t tried that one yet, but it’s definitely on my list! You can join their tours as an individual, or as a group – private tours are available, and would be a great party experience or a birthday or bachelor/bachelorette experience. The tour was fun and informational, and I would definitely recommend it! Check out their website and book your own tour today!
