Project Pan 2018

Hello, my name is Courtney, and I’m a makeup addict. My best friend Rachel is also a makeup addict. This is not good for either one of us, or our wallets. I got into makeup (I mean, seriously got into makeup) about 3 years ago, and it was mostly thanks to Rachel and my friend Sam. Since then, my collection has grown quite a bit. In November, Rachel told me about a YouTube series she’d gotten into, called the 12 pans of Christmas, which is part of a project pan segment. She suggested that I get into this series for my blog. At that point, I felt that it was a little late to get into the 12 pans of Christmas, but the idea of doing a project pan intrigued me.

Project pan and 12 pans of Christmas videos came up in my YouTube suggestions not long after. Curious after hearing Rachel make the suggestion, I started watching… and kept watching… and watching. Now that I’ve watched quite a few videos, I’m going to try my hand at project panning in 2018.
For those who haven’t heard of project pan, it’s a way to use up makeup, and try to get as much use from a product as possible. The point is to “pan” a product (aka hit pan, or the bottom of a product). The term comes from the container of a makeup product, usually called a pan. Once you hit pan, you’ve reached the bottom. When you’ve completely used up a product, you have panned it.
This is my first project pan, so I’m going to dip my toes in and just get my feet a little wet. I’m using this first project pan as a test to see how effective it is for me, and how well I can actually perform. After watching some YouTube, I think I have a pretty good understanding of what’s possible and what isn’t. I’m going to try not to be too ambitious. My goal for this project pan is to use up as much of the products I choose as I possibly can. I want to at least hit pan, and if possible, I want to pan the entire product. I just really want to get as much use out of the products I already own as I can through the year 2018. If I finish a product, I’ll add a new product in.
Now, since I’ve probably talked a little too much, let’s get into the products I want to pan.
First, I want to include my Physician’s Formula Butter Bronzer. If you’ve been paying attention to the makeup world, this is a cult classic. It’s been a staple in my collection since I learned how to correctly use bronzer, and it’s definitely one of my favorite products. I’ve made quite a bit of progress on it, but I want to use it on a more regular basis.
Another product in the bronzer family I want to hit pan on is my Too Faced Pink Leopard blushing bronzer. I know, you may be wondering why I chose two bronzers. It may seem silly, but I use these two products  in completely different ways. I mostly use the PF bronzer to warm up my skin, usually on my forehead. I use the TF bronzer on my cheeks in place of blush. I know most people dislike this bronzer, but it’s one of my holy grail products. I brush it on quickly when I’m running low on time and just need a little pop of color on my face but don’t want to use a bunch of products. It’s subtle, it’s pretty, and it gives me a little flush to my cheeks without being too much.
I also want to finish my L’oreal Pro Glow foundation. This one’s been a favorite of mine since it came out. I have dry skin, and this foundation looks great on my skin. I’ve been holding onto it, but I really need to use it up. It’s also not cruelty free, so I want to get it out of my collection. I’m also adding the powder to my L’oreal Pro Glow collection that I want to pan. I really like it, but it’s not cruelty free and I struggle to use up powders. So I want to challenge myself to use this powder up.
I have a ton of blushes, and I love going back and forth between the colors. However, this means I don’t ever really get the full use out of any of the colors. NARS has recently switched from Cruelty Free back to selling in China (come on NARS, huge disappointment), so I’m putting one of those blushes into my project. I love the color Impassioned. It’s a pretty, neutral color that looks very natural on my skin. I think it’;; be easy to make myself use this one more regularly.
I want to actually make it through a shadow. I’m going to try to use a complete pot of the Colourpop Super Shock Shadow in the shade Mixed Tape. I’ve already used quite a bit of this shadow. It’s a really pretty color to just throw on when I want something on my eyes but don’t have a lot of time. I know the Super Shock shadows are hit or miss for people, but I really enjoy using them, so I want to try to completely use up this one.
Another foundation I want to use up is my Tarte Rainforest of the Sea foundation. This is my holy grail foundation. It’s great for dry skin, and it actually comes in a shade that matches my pale skin. I bought a backup of it during the Sephora VIB sale, so I want to use my current bottle up and get into the new bottle pretty quickly.
I received the Beauty For Real Lip Scrub in a subscription box, and I LOVE it. It really makes my lips feel better, and helps get the dry skin off. Although I love it, it’s been in my collection for a while and I want to make sure to use it up before it goes bad. It still smells and tastes OK for now, but I’m not sure how long that will last. It’s cruelty free, which is great, so this probably will be an item I’ll repurchase once it’s gone. (Find it on Amazon here.
I want to hit pan on at least two shades in my Too Faced Natural Matte palette, Cashmere Bunny and Risque. I think this one will be a fairly easy task. I frequently use this palette as a supplement palette, when I just need a matte lid or crease shade, and I often reach for two shades. They look great with my skintone, and I think I can hit pan on them.
I want to completely finish up my Tarte Shape Tape Concealer. I know I’m in the minority here, but I’m actually not a fan of this concealer. It just doesn’t perform well for me. And I’m so fair that even the lightest color doesn’t brighten my undereyes. I’ve also had it in my collection for a while, so I just want to get rid of it and use it up.
I’ve already mentioned that my skin is very dry. I’m putting the Smashbox Primer Water in my project to try to add some hydration to my skin on a more regular basis. I also enjoy using this spray to foil my shadows, so I think this one should be pretty easy to use up. I have a few setting sprays, so I really want to use a couple of them up. I’m going to focus on the Primer Water because I already know I really enjoy using it.
Last, I’d really like to use up my Kevyn Aucoin Sculpting Powder. When the shade light finally emerged, I knew I wanted it. I’d heard so many great things about it, but the shade medium would have been way too dramatic for my skin. The only thing that kept me from buying this powder was the price. $44 is pretty steep for a contouring powder, no matter how good it is. I ended up catsitting for a friend who brought this back from Vegas for me, and I was so excited. It is a really good contour powder, and I want to be sure to get as much use out of it as I can. This is definitely a product I don’t want to waste, which is why I want to challenge myself to pan it.
Are there any products you’d like to pan this year? What do you think will be my most challenging product to use? Let me know in the comments below! Also let me know if you have any tips for using any of these products up!
